Our club was invited to fly at a local airfield that was having an open house. We had a great time. I had a chance to talk to the guy who runs the field and he gave the go ahead to have SOT out there if we want. Here is the rundown.
Pros -
Very large field. The kind of area we had at SPADFest but not corn stalks.
Camping allowed
Not a sanctioned event (You know what I mean RH?  )
Night flying should be ok, but I would have to check if IC engines would be ok. There is a neighborhood at one end of the airport, but it is not close at all to were we would be flying.
Stores and the like close.
Cons -
The field is a bit rough. The guy would cut it for us, but has the clumpy kind of grass. Our club had no problems flying from it.
Not electricity, but that's true at the club field as well.
No starting tables. This is not normally an RC site.
After the fun I had at SF last year, I thought that not having to rent a hotel would make it easier on some, and we might get a few more people that couldn't afford the cost before. We have time, and the club is more than willing to let us use the club field, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

This is actually the field. Google doesn't recognize our little road. The street directly across from our gravel road is Hinkle. If you turn right you are on Hinkle (wrong way) Left you go to the field. (fun fun fun)

how far is lowes and walmart?
sun at you back is really nice....
is it near a lake? will we need waders to fetch the inevitable boat plane?

Truthfully, and direstion we want. The club flew facing the same direction as the club field, sunrise at our backs. There is no reason we couldn't fly from the other side later in the evening.

Decator Texas. It's 27 miles west of Denton. I'll get to working on maps and such so you can get a better idea.

No lake. I will look into the location of Wally world and the like. I know Clean will need a Walmart near by.

We usually have it in March. But if we fly at the airport, we won't have to worry about conflicts with the club events, so there is a bit more leeway there.

The NASCAR race in Texas is April 5th.
Maybe Team Abby Normal could make SOT on SAT. and catch a RACE on Sunday?????

That could be a draw back. 
I going to be in texas that weekend anyway. I think there will be room's avail. in Decatur.
My club is having a SPRING BREAK NITE-FRY. On March 14 th. So I couldn't make it that weekend.
I hope Ya'll nail down a date soon.

Hey, look who showed up. Been too busy to fly or anything for several months, but the weathers getting nice and my thumbs are itching. If there is still interest, I think mid March is a bit short notice for everyone. The club has it's April fools fun fly on the weekend of the 4th and as stated, the races will have everything locked up. That said, I haven't had much contact with the airport guy, but if we can still use the Decatur field, Hotels wouldn't be a problem as we can camp, and I haven't been to the April fools fun fly yet. If not in Decatur, then the next weekend in April would be a safe bet. I will go out to Decatur this weekend and see what I can find out. Let me know what you think. Now I have over 5000 posts to read  .

Well Look who showed up? Yes I know it's been awhile. I've been way to out of pocket to work on this. If there is any interest in getting together for a fall SoTex let me know. Other wise we can wait for next spring. We can always do both. I was never able to get in touch with the Decatur guy. Not sure if he even works the airport any more, so if we do it this fall it will be in Denton. I have just started combat and my first meet is a week from Sunday. I'm thinking I might talk to that club about a spring spad event and they are out in the country and might allow camping. Other wise Denton Is always willing. If you guys want to do fall let me know. Mid Sept to Mid Oct would be best.
